For Tekla, we delivered the project entirely in-house with our director Anaïs Herd-Smith, treatment, direction, art direction, animation, and post-production, start to finish.

The piece was built entirely from paper craft, but the process behind it was anything but simple. The dog at the centre of the film was first animated frame by frame in 2D, then every single movement hundreds of individual frames was printed and hand-cut out of white textured paper. Each frame was then printed and cut a second time in black, to sit behind the white layer and stop light from bleeding through during the stop-motion shoot itself.

Every building and every character in the world around the dog was built the same way: paper, cut and constructed by hand, then animated on a physical stop-motion set bringing a flat, 2D-animated character into a fully three-dimensional, tactile world.

It's a project that shows the full range of what our studio can do under one roof from animation and craft through to direction and post and the kind of technical problem-solving (like the double-layer paper method) that only comes from building something entirely by hand, frame by frame.
