OVERVIEW
To announce the opening of Drumheads, we created a one-minute stop-motion piece charting a bug's transformation into a moth frame by frame, at true 24fps shot in two’s making 12 puppets for one second of animation, using 3D-printed models rather than a single articulated puppet.
To get the transformation right, we studied real-life documentary time-lapse footage of the process and matched each stage of development down to the millimetre. That meant designing, 3D printing, and hand-painting 720 individual models one for every frame of the animation each capturing a fractional step of the change from bug, to chrysalis, to moth, then numbering all 720 so they could be shot in exact sequence on site at Drumheads.
It's one of the most painstaking pieces we've made: no shortcuts, no puppet rigging, just 720 individually crafted stages of a single living transformation.

Working with the wonderful team at STINK and directed by Eoin Glaister, we had the pleasure of being part of this fantastically creative video for new music venue space, the Drumheads in North London.
For this we designed, 3D printed, painted and animated 300 prints for a replacement animation done on location. It was amazing to create the various stages of metamorphosis and watch them move on camera.
